Case Study: Leveraging carbon instruments for financial sustainability in a soy landscape initiative
Report on capturing climate finance for landscape initiatives
The Western Mato Grosso Sustainable Landscape Initiative includes a range of activities across six municipalities, aligned with the state's PCI strategy, which aim to increase sustainable agricultural production in the state while ensuring conservation of native vegetation and inclusion of smallholders and Indigenous Peoples. The activities within the landscape initiative include conservation and restoration efforts as well as regenerative agriculture on soy farms, which provide carbon benefits through avoided, removed, and reduced emissions.
A collaboration between Proforest, IPAM, Instituto PCI and Produzindo Certo, the report on capturing climate finance for landscape initiatives was released in November 2024. This business case for the Western Mato Grosso Sustainable Landscape initiative, supported by the Land Innovation Fund (LIF), presents the results of a supply and demand analysis, exploring various options of instruments for leveraging carbon benefits to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the initiative. Specially, it was looked at corporate climate targets in the form of SBTi, carbon credits, and more, and confirmed that a combination of different financing mechanisms is recommended to attend to the needs of different activities within the landscape initiative.
The analysis is based on a combination of desk-based research, stakeholder interviews, and landscape-specific data.
