Recover 121,608 hectares of pasture with low productivity by 2023

Barra do Garças is located in the southeast of Mato Grosso state. Its economy is based on agriculture and&nbsp;tourism, with emphasis on the production of soy, rice, corn and livestock. It is located in the Cerrado biome and it is considered a transition region in terms of its agricultural production; historically a livestock region, now the grains are also expanding over the degraded pastureland areas. The total area of the municipality is 907.900 ha, of which 361.083 ha is dedicated to agriculture production and 505.421ha of preserved native vegetation, of which 211.112ha are indigenous land and 11.000ha are located inside a State Park.&nbsp; IDH, together with TNC and local stakeholders, have conducted a process designed to build a sustainable development vision for the municipality of Barra do Garças. This process, which took place in the first half of 2019, had as its main stages the engagement of local stakeholders, the agreement on intentions regarding the priorities for the municipality of Barra do Garças, the set-up of goals, and the consolidation of the common vision for the municipality through the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on June 2019. In December of 2019, a municipal law was issued creating the Barra do Garças PCI Program and, in July of 2020 a municipal decree was issued creating the Barra do Garças PCI Municipal Committee which will have the mandate to coordinate the implementation of the local strategy.&nbsp;

ABOUT THE PCI STRATEGY
The PCI Strategy is a jurisdictional approach to sustainable rural development, bringing together public, private, and not-for profit actors around long-term goals in its three pillars: Produce, Conserve, and Include. It was launched in December 2015 at COP 21 with the objective of reducing emissions and enabling carbon sequestration through deforestation control coupled with the development of a low-carbon economy in the state. The strategy is based on building an agenda of convergence of interests in the state's agricultural economy, increasing (i) the efficiency of agricultural and forestry production (P axis); (ii) the conservation of remaining native vegetation and restoration of environmental liabilities (C axis); and (iii) the socioeconomic inclusion of family farming and traditional peoples and communities (I axis). The PCI (Produce, Conserve, and Include) strategy is fundamental for the state to achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2035. The PCI strategy aims to increase the sustainability of agricultural production by improving livestock productivity and expanding grain acreage on already cleared land; eliminate illegal deforestation; implement the Forest Code; reduce fires; and create financial compensation mechanisms to prevent legal deforestation. It also aims to support family farming and traditional and indigenous populations in accessing credit, technical assistance, institutional markets, and land regularization.
ABOUT THE PCI INSTITUTE
The PCI Institute is a private, non-profit organization, governed by the Government of Mato Grosso, the private sector, the productive sector, and organized by the civil society. Its objective is to support the state of Mato Grosso in raising and executing financial resources from national and international donors and investors for the implementation of the PCI strategy, promoting sustainable development and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The PCI Institute is regulated by Decree No. 46 of February 27, 2019, and by its Articles of Association

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; line-height: 115%; tab-stops: 14.2pt; border: none; mso-padding-alt: 31.0pt 31.0pt 31.0pt 31.0pt; mso-border-shadow: yes; margin: 12.0pt -7.1pt 12.0pt 0cm;">The Sustainable Livestock Program of Pará was launched during COP 28, in Dubai (2023), marking the state of Pará as a pioneer in the individual traceability of cattle and buffaloes in Brazil.
The program seeks to ensure that livestock production in Pará is sustainable, allowing products from farms to meet the needs of the requirements of factories and markets, including international ones.
The program was established through Decree No. 3,533, of November 27, 2023, which instituted the "Program for the Integrity and Development of the Production Chain of Cattle Raising in Pará" and created the Official Individual Bovine Traceability System of Pará (SRBIPA). Decree No. 4,754, of June 24, 2025, conferred on the Agricultural Defense Agency of the State of Pará (ADEPARÁ) the strategic, financial, and operational management of the Sustainable Livestock Program of Pará.
The program is managed by a Management Council (COGES), composed of representatives of several state secretariats, such as the State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability (SEMAS), State Secretariat for Agricultural Development and Fisheries (SEDAP), State Secretariat for Family Agriculture of Pará (SEAF), Agricultural Defense Agency of the State of Pará (ADEPARÁ), Land Institute of Pará (ITERPA), as well as representatives of organized civil society, the private sector and the third sector (Imaflora and TNC).
The Management Council of the Sustainable Livestock Program of Pará is the program's governance body, with aimed at articulating and integrating efforts between the public sector and the private sector, seeking sustainable development for livestock in the state of Pará, with socio-environmental responsibility and transparency at all stages of the production chain.&nbsp;
In addition, the Sustainable Livestock Program of Pará has an Advisory Board - composed of 19 institutions, including IDH – which has the function of presenting technical proposals to the Management Council, for evaluation and development of the Program, in addition to recommendations and environmental and legal manifestations.
